Visualizing a Morning

I’m reading Lean Analytics by right now and have found some absolute gems in the book.  One of my favorite sections so far is called Empathy, and describes what founders should measure when they are setting up their MVPs.  In that section, there is a picture from some write up Indi Young did on mental models.  In it, Indi lists a number of morning behaviors alongside various product categories.  Have a look.

This is a brilliant way to think about how customers might use your product.  Indi associates mental models we use in the morning with the associated products we use to fufill those models.  It’s a unique and clever way to view where your product might fit into someone’s life, and would help a founder design, market, or tweak their existing products.  It’s also just fun to see a typical morning mapped out and visualized.

I’m getting some useful ideas out of this book, and am enjoying how the authors pull best practices from a wide range of real world companies and the people who work for them.  Before this I’d never heard about Indi Young, yet now I’m looking forward to digging into her work.  Books create long tails of discovery like that.  I might just have to map it out.
