{"id":443,"date":"2018-09-17T18:39:27","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T16:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jongore.com\/blog\/?p=443"},"modified":"2018-09-17T18:39:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T16:39:27","slug":"mental-model-monday-sherlock-holmes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jongore.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/mental-model-monday-sherlock-holmes\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Model Monday: Sherlock Holmes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been reading &#8220;A Few Lessons From Sherlock Holmes&#8221; by Peter Bevellin and it&#8217;s stimulated some great thinking about mental models and critical thinking.\u00a0 Observation, in particular, is highlighted by Bevellin as one of Holmes&#8217; best attributes.\u00a0 There&#8217;s one section in the book titled &#8220;Know where to look&#8221;, and I&#8217;d just like to quote from it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes indeed you see, we all see, but often you do not observe&#8221; &#8211; Dr. Joe Bell<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perhaps I have trained myself to see what others overlook.&#8221; &#8211; Holmes, A Case of Identity<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The value of experience is not seeing much, but in seeing wisely&#8221; &#8211; William Osler<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The necessary knowledge is that of what to observe&#8221; &#8211; C. Auguste Dupin, The Murders in the Rue Morgue<\/p>\n<p>The above quotes all point towards a skill that can be learned.\u00a0 Observation and discernment applied to observation are two skills that I think are easily learned.\u00a0 There&#8217;s hundreds of millions of results on google for &#8220;how to train you observation powers.&#8221;\u00a0 Most of it is common sense and just about putting down your phone and challenging yourself.\u00a0 I&#8217;m no life coach but I think this is one of the easier models that I&#8217;ve written about.
