{"id":395,"date":"2018-07-19T20:00:46","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jongore.com\/blog\/?p=395"},"modified":"2018-07-19T20:00:46","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T18:00:46","slug":"when-elephants-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jongore.com\/blog\/fintech\/when-elephants-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"When Elephants Fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s an African proverb that goes &#8220;When two elephants fight, it&#8217;s the grass that dies.&#8221;\u00a0 The saying is applicable to wars, policy, labour, and a multitude of other scenarios.\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t heard of it before this week when a twitter friend told me about it.\u00a0 He told it to me in the context of an article I posted on an upcoming battle between two software giants in Africa.\u00a0 And he said it might be the first case of &#8220;the grass&#8221; <strong>benefiting<\/strong> in this case.\u00a0 The story is about the looming competition between M-Pesa and Whatsapp for payment king in Africa.\u00a0 M-Pesa has long been the king of the jungle.\u00a0 Its dominance is documented in case studies across MBA curricula worldwide, and it now has plans to spread across Sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Whatsapp is the messenger of choice for most of the emerging market world.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1313197\/whatsapp-is-getting-set-to-be-africas-biggest-payments-and-ad-platform\/\">Their approach has been to launch Whatsapp for businesses<\/a>, which is seen as the first step for getting into payments.\u00a0 \u00a0A key quote from the article is below.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;WhatsApp Business has been something of a Trojan horse for the platform\u2019s commercial potential. \u201cIt\u2019s already big, larger than we would have expected, with several million users,\u201d he said, declining to reveal specific numbers. He described the total as \u201calready very material\u201d even when viewed in the context of Facebook\u2019s 70 million global advertisers&#8230;In countries where WhatsApp has gained major market share, central banks and other financial regulators will naturally be concerned about its impact.
