Always interesting times in this sector&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mergers &amp; Acquisitions (M&amp;A)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An evident push for industry consolidation across continents saw potential changes in the Ghanian, Indian and Senegalese MNO landscapes. Bharti Airtel (Airtel Ghana) entered an agreement to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itnewsafrica.com\/2017\/01\/telecoms-merger-could-see-major-shake-up-in-ghana\/\"><span class=\"s2\">merge<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">with Millicom International (Tigo Ghana) aiming to displace Ghana\u2019s second-largest market player, Vodafone. In Senegal, we saw Wari make a <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3262\"><span class=\"s2\">US$129mn bid<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">for Millicom\u2019s Tigo Senegal; responding to industry rumours of Orange\u2019s initial market interest nine-months prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Shifting continents, Airtel India\u2019s acquisition of Telenor was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeebiz.com\/companies\/news-bharti-airtels-board-approves-acquisition-of-telenor-india-shares-gain-13203\"><span class=\"s2\">green-lit<\/span><\/a>, providing seamless customer and network integration, while simultaneously strengthening Airtel India\u2019s market-leading position. On the contrary, India\u2019s number two player, Vodafone, made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/featured-content\/home-banner\/vodafone-ceo-vows-to-fight-on-in-india\/\"><span class=\"s2\">defensive play<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to \u2018create a stronger asset\u2019 by initiating merger talks with India\u2019s third-largest market player, Idea Cellular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Product Development<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From Uganda\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dignited.com\/15242\/l-pesa-mobile-money-micro-loans\/\"><span class=\"s2\">ReadyPay Solar<\/span><\/a> micro instalment product, Ghana\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3257\"><span class=\"s2\">eTranzact<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">mobile money card, the launch of Safaricom\u2019s taxi-hailing <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3267\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018Little Cab\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">mobile-based Savings and Credit Co-Operative Society (SACCO) to <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3295\"><span class=\"s2\">Bitwala\u2019s<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">bitcoin M-PESA remittance integration; innovation is rife across both new and old mobile money territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sparking significant market interest, Ecobank Ghana launched the first government-based mobile money product, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/2016\/10\/01\/ecobank-launches-mobile-money-treasury-bill-product\/\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018TBill4All\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">self-service 91-day and 182-day treasury bill. While the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Kenyan government swiftly responded with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/money\/news-money\/kenya-offers-government-bond-through-m-pesa-airtel\/\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018M-Akiba\u2019<\/span><\/a> bond for both Airtel and Safaricom customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A push towards the legalisation of the Agency Banking Model in Uganda has seen <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3288\"><span class=\"s2\">Stanbic<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">commit to hiring agents with aims to minimise current levels of branch losses (~25%). <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3234\"><span class=\"s2\">Ecobank Nigeria<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">has begun rollout of its Agency Banking locations in partnership with Airtel Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Market activity from MTN across multiple territories saw the launch of MTN Ghana\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3260\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018Yello Save\u2019<\/span><\/a> savings product in partnership with Fidelity Bank, <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3294\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018Tap2Pay\u2019<\/span><\/a> NFC integration and MTN Rwanda\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3275\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2018MoKash Saving\u2019<\/span><\/a> interest-earning savings product in partnership with the Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA).\u00a0 Due to a lack of commercial viability, MTN South Africa terminated its mobile money payment partnership with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia\u2019s, <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3280\"><span class=\"s2\">Tyme<\/span><\/a>. Irrespective, MTN South Africa remains committed in exploring new ways to bring banking services to its customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Regulatory Environment<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Much to the frustration of Ghanian MNOs, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to impose <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3250\"><span class=\"s4\">a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">third-party intermediary<\/span><\/a> for inter-MNO mobile money transactions. On the contrary, the <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201703020828.html\"><span class=\"s2\">International Finance Corporation (IFC)<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">has launched its campaign to encourage and promote the interoperability of mobile money services in Tanzania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mobile money pioneer, Safaricom, has come under pressure from the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK). The first area of concern was raised in terms of <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3272\"><span class=\"s2\">fee disclosure<\/span><\/a>, with the CAK encouraging transparency via SMS as a replacement for tariff guides used in the past. More severely, the CAK commissioned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/money\/news-money\/safaricom-facing-call-to-break-up-business\/\"><span class=\"s2\">report<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">recommending that Safaricom separate its M-PESA business from its communications business. While amendments to banking and communication regulations have been proposed, the changes in law must still be approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kenya also saw the launch of its interbank mobile money transfer platform, <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilemoneyafrica.com\/content.php?id=3277\"><span class=\"s2\">Pesalink<\/span><\/a>. As twenty-four banks go head-to-head with M-PESA; Pesalink serves as a complimentary tool enabling customers to make real-time cash transfers between mobile, internet banking channels, ATMs and branches. However, despite positive market traction, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has instructed banks to reduce the Pesalink mobile money transfer transaction time by 50% as the system is perceived to be \u2018too slow\u2019 at forty seconds per transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Onto Q2 we go\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of our staff writes a quarterly round up of the mobile money scene.
