Mental Model Monday: In the Moment

I’ve picked up surfing this winter in Cape Town.  The number of times I’ve could count the number of times I battered around and swallowed sea water has long since past.  72 hours is the amount of time I want to spend in the water this winter.  That’s over three months.  Each session is roughly 1 hour, so it’s a big commitment.  The time out in the water has been worth it, without a doubt.  Today, after a hectic day at work, one where I felt stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted, I decided to leave the office and go for a surf.  After 5 minutes in the water I was gliding down my first wave, and the 8 hours of stress melted away in the 8 seconds I was standing up on that wave.  I felt purely in the moment.  That’s the mental model for today. It’s not something you can apply in business meetings or to a strategy session.  It’s equally as important as any model you’ll ever develop though.  Find some time in your life to live in the moment. Whether that’s sports, or reading, or surfing, your life will be immeasurably better when you appreciate where you are, and why it’s spectacular.
