Mental Model Monday: SpringLoading

Lately I’ve considered what it is I want in my career.  The answer is getting to a technical role.  That means either in product or engineering.  Right now, I’ve been in a fantastic sales/management role for the past three years.  The fintech company I work at is at the vanguard of mobile lending in the world, and it’s been incredibly interesting working here.  So when I think about what is next in terms of a career change, it’s not that I want to change the industry, or even the company, rather it’s that I want to change roles.  And when that happens I want to make sure I’m positively springloaded to succeed at my new role.

A system is spring-loaded if it is coiled in a certain direction, positive or negative. Positively spring-loading systems and relationships is important in a fundamentally unpredictable world to help protect us against negative events. The reverse can be very destructive.

An example of how I’m spring-loading my life for a career change is that I’ve spent the last year learning Android development, and I’ve heavily invested time in the crypto community.  I am a beginner at both, but I’m not ready to change careers.  When that time comes I hope to have a significant portfolio and network to leverage.  Go spring-load your life.
